Before you can take advantage of this convenient way to pay for transit, you have to make sure you have added Interac Debit as a payment method in your phone’s digital wallet.

What you need to know about reloading your OPUS card with Interac Debit

What do you need before you begin?

• A Canadian bank account with a participating financial institution
• A debit card associated with your bank account
• An iPhone or Android mobile device with the Chrono-OPUS Reload app installed and the Near-Field Communication (NFC) capability enabled. (Note: It is enabled by default on iOS devices.)
• The Apple Pay or Google Pay digital wallet app with Interac Debit loaded as a payment method
• An internet connection
• An OPUS card

How to use Interac Debit to load your OPUS card

Follow the steps below to learn how to make Interac Debit your easy and secure payment method for loading your OPUS card — that way, you can get around and stay in control of your budget by paying with your own money in your account.

1. Open the app and press the OPUS card icon on the top-right corner of the screen. Or access the main menu by pressing the three-line icon at the top left and choose “OPUS read and reload.”

2. Read the preview of the steps and press “Start.”

3. Read the OPUS card: When prompted, place your OPUS card against the phone and move it around until you feel a vibration, which signals that the connection is made. (The location of the detection area differs by phone model; it can be located on the front or back. On iPhones, for example, the detection area is on the upper back of the device).

4. Now, hold your OPUS card still for a few seconds so the app can recognize and read it. The current content of your card will be displayed.

5. Choose a transit fare: Select a fare based on your travel zone (e.g., A, B, C, D) and the type of fare you’ll be using. If it looks correct, confirm your order.

6. Now select your payment method. To pay with Interac Debit, select Apple Pay or Google Pay and then choose Interac Debit as your payment method. (This is easier if you have already set it as your default payment method.)

7. Follow the prompt to complete your payment.

8. Place the card against the phone again (as in Step 4) to complete the reloading process. And the updated content of your card will be displayed.
