Read on as we answer four quick-fire questions so you can get up to speed quick. Weโll also explain how to get your digital wallet ready for debit transactions โ with security tips along the way.
What is a mobile wallet?
Weโve all heard of a mobile wallet, but what is it exactly? Sometimes also known as a digital wallet (or e-wallet), itโs an app on your phone that allows you to add your debit card as a contactless payment method through your digital wallets. You can use it to pay for purchases in-store, or through a mobile wallet app or website. After youโve added your debit card to your mobile wallet, you donโt need to enter your card number or shipping address for every mobile or e-commerce digital transaction.
What are the benefits of using a mobile wallet?
E-wallets are safe and secure, and thereโs no easier or faster way to pay. You donโt need to waste time digging for your card in your physical wallet (which you donโt need to carry anyway, if youโre just using a digital wallet). So, itโs perfect for those who are always on the go and like to travel light.
Mobile wallets are also accepted at most retailers across Canada, so you can use them almost anywhere and the number of places theyโre accepted is growing. As of 2023, UP Express, GO Transit and additional PRESTO device users can use contactless Interac Debit payments for travel without the need for a dedicated transit pass across Ontario. Additionally, TransLink customers began paying for transit using Interac Debit on every bus and at every fare throughout Metro Vancouver. In fact, TransLink is the first transit agency in Canada to fully integrate contactless Interac Debit payments systemwide.
