What are you most excited about for the rest of this year?
Reuniting with old friends? Celebrating a birthday in a big way โโฏwhether yours or someone elseโs? That first group trip in a (very) long time?
For millions of Canadians, itโs shaping up to be a year of little shared moments and big milestones. If you have plans to live life to the fullest in 2022, youโre definitely not alone. And if youโre planning to use Interac e-Transfer as a safe money transfer service to share costs with friends and family, youโre not alone there, either, according to a recent Interac survey (you can see the survey details here).
Millions of shared moments with Interac e-Transfer
Around three-quarters of Canadians (74 per cent) want to spend more time having fun experiences with friends and family as we start to emerge from COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, according to our survey.
Many Canadians are carefully returning to activities theyโve missed over the pandemic. What are the moments people are looking forward to? Hereโs what our survey results revealed.
What moments are Canadians excited to share with family and friends?
A year of milestones: One billion Interac e-Transfer payments
Sharing moments and milestones often means sharing the costs of experiences with family and friends. Canadians reached a new milestone for sharing money person-to-person in the month of April 2022, when they reached a billion Interac e-Transfer transactions in a 12-month period for the first time.
One billion is an exciting number. But whatโs even more exciting? Many Interac e-Transfer payments help connect two or more people over a shared experience.
Many Canadians have used Interac e-Transfer in their lives as they make the most of opportunities to get together with friends, family and other people they want to spend time with. More than half (56 per cent) use Interac e-Transfer to split the cost of shared experiences with family and friends at least once a month.
That means somewhere in those billion transactions were countless moments of connection between people.
Younger Canadians are making up for lost time
Those moments of connection are more precious than ever. Seven out of 10 Generation Z adults told us they missed out on shared experiences during the first two years of the pandemic. Now theyโre eager to make up for lost time, and nearly two thirds (65 per cent) said itโs those shared activities that will help them make new memories.
Gen Z respondents were also especially eager to spend on experiences, with 55 per cent saying thatโs their priority over material goods (versus just 21 per cent of Silent Generation adults).
How money transfers help you stay in control of your budget
Many Canadians consider Interac e-Transfer to be useful for paying someone back. For that reason, people often use Interac e-Transfer for everyday money transfers. For example, you can use it to split the rent with roommates.
And as Canadians get excited to see more of each other again, many of them will be using Interac e-Transfer to divide the cost of special times and memorable moments with friends, too. Itโs especially easy when you have the Autodeposit feature enabled, because it does away with the need for security questions and answers.
Younger Canadians appear to be the most eager to divvy up the cost of an experience. Two-thirds (67 per cent) say sharing costs with friends and family allows them to get more out of life while staying on budget. And 62 per cent of Gen Z agree that rising prices make it essential to split expenses. (Thanks a lot, inflation.)
As a bonus, once the fun is done you can use Interac e-Transfer to help reduce the awkwardness of asking someone to pay you back. Thatโs the beauty of using the Request Money feature. Because after the moment is over, you want to think about the memories โโฏnot the money.
