How does Western Union® money transfers via Interac e-Transfer® work?

Western Union money transfers via Interac e-Transfer works in 2 easy steps:

Step 1 - Initiate a Money Transfer from your online bank account.

Log in to online banking at a participating financial institution and go to the Western Union money transfers via Interac e-Transfer section to enter the recipient’s information. Enter the required fields and confirm your money transfer. If a recipient email address is provided, the recipient is notified that a money transfer has been sent.

Step 2 - Provide the MTCN (Money Transfer Control Number).

Once you have confirmed your money transfer, you will receive a MTCN. Provide the MTCN to the intended recipient and instruct the recipient to visit a Western Union® Agent location in the payout country, and if applicable, state, to claim the funds. Once at a Western Union Agent location, the recipient must present valid identification and the MTCN before the funds can be released.5

Protections employed for Western Union® Money Transfers via Interac e-Transfer®

When you send Western Union money transfers via Interac e-Transfer, the money never actually travels by email. If a recipient email is provided, emails will be used to notify the recipient that a transfer has been sent. Your participating financial institution and Western Union transfer funds using established banking procedures.

Western Union money transfers via Interac e-Transfer relies on several security measures:

  • Encryption technology;
  • Confidential user IDs and passwords issued by participating financial institutions;
  • A transfer tracking process; and
  • No need to set up new accounts, user ID or passwords — you're already in online banking.

Tracking your Western Union® Money Transfers via Interac e-Transfer®

As a sender

Western Union money transfers via Interac e-Transfer confirmation numbers are saved in your online banking history, which allows you to see your transfer history in online banking, look up the MTCN, change the recipient name, and initiate a refund. Additionally, if you provided your email address, you will receive an email notification once the intended recipient has claimed the money transfer from a Western Union® Agent location.

As a recipient

Recipients will be required to present valid identification along with the MTCN before they can claim their money transfer.5

Always be careful when sending money online

Like using cash, you should send money transfers only to parties you know and trust, for example, sending money to family and friends back home, repaying IOUs, sending monetary gifts, etc. For uses where you may not know the recipient well, take the precautions you would normally take when making cash purchases.

Western Union® money transfers via Interac e-Transfer® transactions cannot be reversed once the recipient of the transfer has claimed the funds. You must obtain a refund directly from the recipient.
