How does Interac Flash work?

Your customer’s Interac chip debit card will continue to carry out traditional Interac Debit transactions, but the functionality of the card has been enhanced to also conduct contactless transactions. Cardholders will have the option of paying for items less than $100 using Interac Flash.

The customer simply holds the debit card in front of the supporting reader at the point-of-sale and the purchase will automatically be debited from the customer's account. They do not need to insert the card or enter a PIN. As an added layer of security, there are single transaction and cumulative spend limits in place. Once reached, cardholders must validate themselves by inserting their card and entering their PIN, just as they would conduct a regular Interac Debit transaction.

Peace of mind for merchants

By accepting Interac Flash, merchants continue to receive the benefits of secure and non-refutable transactions, including no chargebacks associated with PIN-based Interac Debit, while offering their customers a fast and convenient check-out experience. Interac Flash has all of the security features of Interac Debit, plus additional security features as a contactless payment technology:

  1.

Secure chip processing - transactions never rely on the magentic stripe.

  2.

No chargebacks with the Interac good funds model.

  3.

Flat-fee (not ad valorem, i.e., percentage-based); pennies per transaction; lower than competitive market alternatives.

  4.

Real-time payment from the cardholder’s account.

  5.

Spending limits that require the cardholder to insert the card into the reader and enter the PIN, ensuring legitimacy of the cardholder and resetting the limits.

  6.

No single transaction can exceed $100 and the total of consecutive contactless transactions (cumulative spend), as set by the financial institutions, does not currently exceed $200.

  7.

Card must be present at the point-of-sale. The number on the front of the card is just an identifier, not an account number, and cannot be used for online debit transactions.

  8.

The Interac Zero Liability Policy your customers can use Interac Flash with confidence.

  9.

World class security and fraud protections.
